2009 MBA Directors Forum Speakers

Walter BaetsWalter Baets, is Associate Dean for Innovation and Social Responsibility, previously Associate Dean for Research, MBA Director and Professor Complexity, Knowledge and Innovation at Euromed Marseille, Ecole de Management. Professor Baets graduated in econometrics and operations research at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). He was awarded a PhD from the University of Warwick and a HDR (from IAE Aix-en-Provence, University Paul Cezanne, Aix-Marseille III. After pursuing a career of more than ten years in business, he held positions in the academic world in Belgium, Russia, the Netherlands, Spain and France. He was particularly active in management development both in Russia and in the Arab world. Dr Baets has authored a number of books. His research and consulting interests are in innovation, knowledge management and management learning and in particular dynamic behaviour in management.

Andrew CrispAndrew Crisp, is Founder and Director, Carrington Crisp, UK. In November 2003, Andrew Crisp founded Carrington Crisp, a consultancy specialising in marketing and branding services for business schools and universities. Since that time the firm has worked for over 50 business schools in 11 countries. Much of the work has been based around The Business of Branding™ research project, which provides schools with data on perceptions and positioning of their school among six key audiences. Andrew’s clients and projects have included re-branding London Business School and Wolverhampton Business School, developing advertising campaigns and internal communications, and writing management training books. Andrew also has considerable research experience utilising both quantitative and qualitative methods. Projects include a study examining business school websites at 18 business schools in the UK. Andrew has also written and spoken widely on the subjects of employment and communications including events organised by The Economist, The Industrial Society, The Design Council and the European Foundation for Management Development

Allison DoorbarAllison Doorbar is the Managing Partner of JWT Education, a division of JWT providing marketing services to the education sector.  A graduate of the University of Sheffield, she moved to Australia and started her career in an advertising agency that had in its portfolio a number of education clients - an experience which led her to pursue a career in the sector.  She has now worked in the education arena for well over a decade and during that time helped education providers in Australia as well as the UK, Europe, North America, and Asia in the development and implementation of their marketing and brand strategies.  This includes work for many of the world's leading universities and business schools in addition to major private providers and government agencies.

Anthony M GrantAnthony M Grant, is a Coaching Psychologist who holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology, a Masters of Arts in Behavioural Science and a PhD. He is both a practitioner and an academic. Anthony left school at the age of fifteen, trained as a carpenter and ran his own contracting business. Embarking on a second career in direct sales and marketing, he began tertiary studies in 1993 and then commenced a third career in his 30’s as a coaching psychologist. In January 2000 Dr Grant established the world’s first Coaching Psychology Unit at the Sydney University. He also has considerable coaching experience at senior levels with leading Australian and global corporations in the financial, legal, media and consumer sectors. He has co-written and co-edited five books on evidence-based coaching and has many coaching-related publications. He is widely recognised as a key pioneer of coaching psychology.

Narelle HooperNarelle Hooper, is the editor of AFR BOSS. She is a former senior writer with the Australian Financial Review. Narelle has reported on Australian business and financial markets for more than 15 years. She previously worked as finance correspondent with ABC Radio's national current affairs programs AM and PM, and was a presenter of SBS TV's The Business Show. She has reported on federal politics as BRW Magazine’s political correspondent based in Canberra and is a former editor of its prestigious Rich 200 List. Narelle grew up in country NSW and studied journalism at Canberra University. She has a Masters of Management (Financial Management) at Macquarie Graduate School of Management.

Rakesh KhuranaRakesh Khurana, is the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School. Professor Khurana received his B.S. from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and his A.M. (Sociology) and Ph.D. in Organization Behavior from Harvard University. Professor Khurana's research uses a sociological perspective to focus on the processes by which elites and leaders are selected and developed. His most recent book, From Higher Aims to Hired Hands: The Social Transformation of American Business Schools and the Unfulfilled Promise of Management as a Profession), chronicles the evolution of management as a profession, with particular focus on the institutional development of the MBA. It received the American Sociological Association's Max Weber Book Award in 2008 and was also the Winner of the 2007 Best Professional/Scholarly Publishing Book in Business, Finance and Management, Association of American Publishers. He has been recognised by the London Times as one of 'The Thinkers 50', a list of the fifty most influential management thinkers in the world.

Fiona McKersieFiona McKersie, is the former Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Queensland Department of Emergency Services. Prior to this she was Deputy Director-General (Governance) of the Queensland Department of the Premier and Cabinet. She has worked for two state governments in Australia and has spent thirteen years in senior executive roles. Fiona has actively contributed to a wide range of state and national committees, including the National Counter Terrorism Committee, the National Critical Infrastructure Advisory Council and the Australian Emergency Management Committee. Fiona chaired the National Remote Indigenous Communities Emergency Management Advisory Committee and represented Queensland on the Council of the Order of Australia. Fiona is currently undertaking contract consultancy work. Clients have included the public sector, ASX listed companies and the tertiary sector. Fiona has Bachelor of Science, a Diploma of Education and a Masters Degree in Science and Society.

Michael PowelMichael Powell, is Pro Vice Chancellor (Business) and Professor of Management at Griffith University. Previously he was Deputy Dean at the University of Auckland Business School. Michael has a PhD from The University of Chicago and has been an active researcher in the areas of professional service firms, professionalisation, leadership of change and public sector reform. He has a strong personal commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability in business education and practice. Michael was the founding Chair of Habitat for Humanity, New Zealand, is Treasurer of the Australian Business Deans' Council and serves on the Board of the international Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative. Griffith Business School was an early signatory to the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education, is an active member of the EFMD Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative and a founding member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Business in Society.

Jeanette Purcell Jeanette Purcell is the Chief Executive of Association of MBAs in the UK. She has an MBA from Cass Business School, London. Since her appointment as Chief Executive of AMBA in 2003 she has led the development and implementation of a new strategy, focusing on establishing the Association's role as the advocate for the MBA. Jeanette has over 20 years experience in management and has worked in both the commercial and public sector. She spent 15 years in the field of further and higher education working on UK national issues, policy development, qualification frameworks and quality assurance. Jeanette teaches leadership skills at a London business school, is a regular speaker at international conferences and is a member of the UK government's National Employers' Forum on management education. She was also a member of the Bologna Taskforce.

Hutch RanckHutch Ranck, was appointed Managing Director of DuPont Australia & New Zealand in October 1999. In addition to his role as Managing Director, he is also Group Managing Director for DuPont operations in ASEAN. Mr Ranck joined DuPont (Australia) in 1979 and has held leadership positions in finance, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and recently in agriculture products. Mr Ranck is Chair of the Business Council of Australia Education, Skills and Innovation Task Force, a member of the BCA Board and the Business Council of Australia representative to the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council, PMSEIC. He is a Director of Futuris Corporation and the Australian Bush Heritage Foundation. An American-born Australian, Mr Ranck has a B S in Economics Wharton School University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Sydney and his interests are golf and sailing.

Dean WoodgateDean Woodgate is Director of Strategic Engagement, Australian Education International, part of DEEWR. AEI provides leadership across all levels of government and industry to support the sustainable development of a world class and globally connected international education and training system in Australia. Dean's section is responsible for stakeholder support and industry engagement as well as management of the Australian Government's Study in Australia brand. From 2005 to mid 2008 Dean headed AEI's office in Taipei. In late 2007 Dean received a Special Commendation from the Premier of Taiwan for his outstanding service to the Taiwanese people and this year will receive the Taiwan Medal for Science recognising is role in developing bilateral science cooperation between Australia and Taiwan. Prior to joining AEI Dean was Associate Director of Marketing & Public Relations at the University of Southern Queensland and Director of Marketing and International Development at Nudgee International College in Brisbane.
